Exhibition by Film Director Nicolas Winding Refn and Game Creator Hideo Kojima

SATELLITES," an exhibition by film director Nicolas Winding Refn and game creator Hideo Kojima, is currently being held at the Prada Aoyama store in Omotesando, Tokyo until August 25, 2024 (Monday).

This exhibition is a must-see for movie fans, game fans, and those interested in contemporary art. Here is a detailed report on the attraction of the exhibition, including the experience of actually visiting it.

What is the exhibition "SATELLITES"? ─ A fusion of two talents, Lehn and Kojima

SATELLITES" is a collaborative art installation by Nicolas Winding Refn, known for his films "Drive" and "Pusher," and Hideo Kojima, internationally acclaimed for "Metal Gear Solid" and "DEATH STRANDING.

The exhibition was conceived and planned by Media Platform byNWR, a media platform led by Refn, with support from the Prada Foundation.
As the exhibition name "Satellites" symbolizes, the theme of two distant entities resonating with each other pervades the entire exhibition.

The 5th floor of Prada Aoyama store transformed into a different dimensional space

Mid-century x retro-futuristic world view

The exhibition is held on the 5th floor of the Prada Aoyama store. Upon exiting the elevator, visitors will find a somewhat homey yet unrealistic space with sofas, beds, lamps, telephones, and other furnishings. It is as if you have wandered into a retro science fiction movie set.

Dialogue between Lehn and Kojima" on a spaceship-shaped TV

The six retro-futuristic TVs are particularly impressive in this space. Refn and Kojima appear on the monitors with exposed wiring, conversing with each other in English and Japanese, respectively. The TVs are exquisitely positioned to make it seem as if the two are actually facing each other and conversing.

The "Find Dialogue" Experience Spreads to the Changing Rooms

The second part of the exhibition takes place in the "changing room" at the back of the floor .Here, visitors will find sofas, suspended monitors, and numerous cassette tapes and Walkmans.

Each tape contains soundtracks and sound bites from the film, as well as AI-translated dialogues between Refn and Kojima in multiple languages.

Visitors can enjoy the interactive experience of picking up a tape, playing it back, and finding their own unique language and layers of meaning.

Here, "a sense of oneness that transcends language barriers and individuality " emerges as a reality.

Not just an exhibition! Check out information on the new "DEATH STRANDING 2

Along with the exhibition, the latest work by director Hideo Kojima, "DEATH STRANDING 2: ON THE BEACH," is also worth paying attention to. The worldview and storytelling of this work is expected to evolve even further from its predecessor.

It is also rumored that the "Hartman" played by Refn will make a reappearance in this film as well, indicating that their relationship overlaps in both worlds, the game and reality.

Refn and Kojima's friendship spanning more than a decade

Behind the exhibition is the longstanding relationship between the two. Kojima was impressed by Refn's film "Valhalla Rising," which led to their contact, and since then they have maintained a unique relationship, communicating not through e-mail but through photos, videos, and pictograms.

This unique form of communication is deeply reflected in the exhibition concept of "SATELLITES.

SATELLITES" communicates future creations

The exhibition brings to light deep themes such as " friendship," " creative collaboration," " new technology and creativity," and " death and beyond.

This can be seen as the result of the wonderful overlap between the asynchronous relationship structures established by Kojima's games and Refn's poetic and introspective viewpoints in his films.

Furthermore, both artists look to a future in which the boundaries between the film and game genres are disappearing, and both believe in the potential for new creations through shared technology.

SATELLITES" exhibition at Prada Aoyama: the future of video and games

The exhibition "SATELLITES" is a very rare opportunity to experience the intersection of Nicolas Winding Refn and Hideo Kojima, two artists of different genres of expression.

It is not a museum, not a movie theater, but a journey through technology and memory, dialogue and translation, set in the luxury space of Prada.

DEATH STRANDING 2: ON THE BEACH, the latest work by director Hideo Kojima, is scheduled for release on June 26, 2025. Together with this exhibition, visitors will be able to enjoy more deeply the future where games and images intersect.

Experience the dialogue between "different dimensions" in Omotesando, Tokyo. This is truly a one-of-a-kind exhibition that crosses film, games, and art. We hope you will visit the exhibition.
