Read in Japanese

While walking down Omotesando, a corner shop with a French flag and black facade suddenly caught my eye. That’s “Salon de Thé Janat (JANAT),” the place I’d like to introduce today.Run by a specialty tea shop founded in Paris in 1872, this tea salon offers a selection of about 40 different teas and homemade cakes—a true paradise for tea lovers.

What Is “JANAT,” the Paris-Based Tea Specialty Store Founded in 1872?

JANAT is a tea brand founded in Paris in 1872. It sources fresh tea leaves directly from carefully selected producers around the world, and in June 2012, it opened its Omotesando location as a tea salon operated by this French-originated specialty tea shop.

The interior creates an atmosphere that feels like traveling around the world, with a world map on the wall and rows of tea tins lining the counter. It’s also equipped with comfortable sofa seating, making it a great spot to linger and enjoy a leisurely tea time.

Exterior and Entrance

The black-toned exterior is accented by the gold “Janat” logo and the words “Depuis 1872” (Since 1872). There is a menu sign near the entrance, and the terrace seating was closed for the time being (at the time of my visit).

An interior that feels like a journey, surrounded by a world map

As soon as you step inside, the first thing that catches your eye is the panel of world maps covering an entire wall. Combined with the leather sofas and subdued lighting, it makes you feel as if you’re in a Parisian café.

Having tea surrounded by world maps—it feels like an adventure and gets me so excited!

Since the seating is mostly sofas, it’s nice to be able to sit back and relax. It’s also an atmosphere that’s easy to enjoy even if you’re alone.

Behind the bar counter in the back, a lineup of about 40 varieties of Jannatz tea, each in its own can, is neatly arranged. If you’re a tea lover, just gazing at this display is sure to be a delightful experience.

Enjoy tea to your heart’s content with the Cake Set (¥1,400)

This time, I ordered the Cake Set (one cake + tea), which comes at a delightful price of ¥1,400. From the “Gâteau de Voyage” series, I chose “Madagascar” —a vanilla cake topped with rich caramel sauce and chopped almonds.

And what delighted me most of all was that the tea was served in pitchers—one for iced tea and one for hot tea. Together, that’s enough for about three cups, allowing you to savor it at your leisure. The aroma was even more pronounced than I’d imagined, and I truly felt, “This is a flavor I could never replicate at home.”

I can’t believe I got to drink so much tea! I just gulped it all down!

To be able to enjoy a cake set at this price in Omotesando—and get three servings of tea to boot—is a great value.

The pleasant aroma of tea wafted through the shop, creating a soothing atmosphere all on its own.

The menu ranges from seasonal sorbets to afternoon tea.
