I’d been curious about “Kaotan Chinese Restaurant” in Akasaka, a place that always has a particularly long line during lunchtime. Since I’d been wanting to try it, I lined up before it even opened. It’s the perfect example of what’s known as a “local Chinese restaurant.”

“Kaotan Chinese Restaurant,” the neighborhood Chinese spot in Akasaka where lines are a given
Located on the first floor of a building about a 3-minute walk from Akasaka Station, “Kaotan Chinese Restaurant” is so popular that there’s always a line at lunchtime—it’s a place I’d been curious about for a while. This time, I lined up before opening, and since I was alone, I was smoothly shown to a seat at the counter.

A popular spot where people line up before opening—the lively atmosphere at the counter
From the counter seats, you can clearly see into the kitchen, and the sight of the staff bustling about gives the place a lively atmosphere. Waiting while gazing at the kitchen—where the aroma of oil and steam wafts out, just like a typical neighborhood Chinese restaurant—is one of the unique pleasures of this place. A QR code for their social media accounts is posted on the kitchen window, so I recommend following them before or after your visit.
I love the counter seats with a view of the kitchen—it’s so lively!
The steam and the sound of pots clanging—that’s the true essence of a neighborhood Chinese restaurant.

Tasting the hearty “Ramen Set”
I ordered the Ramen Set (1,200 yen). It’s a complete meal that includes ramen, a half-serving of rice, pickled vegetables, and boiled vegetables—and I was surprised by just how generous the portion was, even more than I’d imagined. The ramen was generously topped with chashu, menma, and green vegetables, and the broth had a mild soy sauce base. It also came with a small side dish bowl containing bean sprouts, carrots, and jellyfish—all for 1,200 yen, which is excellent value for the money.

The wide variety of menu options is another highlight
Looking at the menu, there are over 20 types of appetizers alone, including edamame, Chinese pickles, bang bang chicken, and vinegar-marinated jellyfish. The à la carte dishes range from classics like mapo tofu, sweet and sour pork, and shrimp in chili sauce to more unusual options such as Chinese-style stir-fried chicken with king oyster mushrooms. As for noodle dishes, the selection goes beyond just ramen to include dan dan noodles, Cantonese noodles, and yakisoba with mixed vegetable sauce—a lineup so diverse that you’ll never get bored, no matter how often you visit.

The dining area, where efficient and courteous service shines
Despite the busy hours, the staff’s service was both efficient and courteous, and you could really feel their consideration for the waiting customers. Rather than the usual hustle and bustle found at popular restaurants with long lines, the impression was one of attentive care—and I could see why this explains the large number of repeat customers.
Polite service even with a long line—how wonderful!
The quality of service really shines through when things get busy. That’s exactly what you’d expect from a popular spot.
