[Harajuku] Design Festa Cafe & Bar
Have you heard of this artistic hideaway café and bar that seems to blend seamlessly into the backstreets of Harajuku?
" Design Festa Cafe & Bar " is a cafe and bar attached to Design Festa Gallery, the organizer of "Design Festa," one of the world's largest art events.

It’s a true local favorite and hidden gem—even among those who have visited the Harajuku and Omotesando areas, many say, “I didn’t know about this!” In this article, we’ll take you on a comprehensive tour of our visit, covering everything from how to find the entrance to the atmosphere and menu.
What is Design Festa Cafe & Bar?
Design Festa Cafe & Bar is a café-bar located on the grounds of Design Festa Gallery, which was founded in 1998.

Design Festa Gallery is a Harajuku landmark known for its striking, pop-art-inspired, colorful exterior. The building, divided into Gallery EAST and Gallery WEST, features permanent and special exhibitions by artists from Japan and abroad, offering a fresh experience with every visit. Adjacent to the gallery is this cafe and bar, a unique space that feels as though it has absorbed the gallery’s artistic atmosphere.
The entrance is super hard to find! Look for the narrow red alley

To be honest, first-time visitors will get lost.
From the main street, you’ll see a narrow red path running alongside a colorful building (Sakura-tei). It’s the kind of alley that makes you wonder, “Is it really okay to go in here?” but this is the right way. Look for the sign that says “DF CAFÉ & BAR OPEN 11:00–23:00” and head down the narrow red-paved path. As you walk surrounded by graffiti art, an open space will gradually come into view.
Since there are many comments on social media saying, “I couldn’t find the entrance” or “I walked right past it,” please be sure to use this article as a guide on your first visit.
A one-of-a-kind space on the semi-outdoor terrace

Step through the alley, and you’ll find yourself in a whole new world. Walls adorned with graffiti, twinkling fairy lights, and trees growing right on the premises—this “semi-outdoor” atmosphere is the greatest charm of Design Festa Cafe & Bar.
Several large trees stand on the terrace, each adorned with a handwritten plaque. The pomegranate tree features a drawing of the fruit and a description, while the camellia tree even bears a waka poem from the Man'yōshū. It is a truly magical space where art and nature coexist.

Since the ceiling is covered with corrugated iron and transparent materials, some areas can shelter you from light rain, but it’s best to avoid visiting on days with bad weather.Sunny or cloudy days are the best time to visit. The terrace seating is divided into a wooden deck area and a red-floored section, offering a rich variety of options—from outdoor-style seats with barrels serving as tables to stylish seating with white round tables paired with rattan chairs. One of the pleasures here is wandering around with a sense of adventure, gazing at the cherry-blossom-patterned green staircase leading to the back and the wall-to-wall graffiti art.
Menu | From Hot Café Lattes to Craft Beer

The menu also features a wide selection of classic café drinks like coffee and tea. This time, I ordered a hot café latte. Served in a rustic ceramic mug, the latte was topped with fluffy milk foam. Savoring it slowly in this artistic space was a truly special experience.

The refrigerator is lined with craft beers from all over Japan. With a wide variety of styles and regions—including Hazy IPA, West Coast IPA, Märzen, and New Zealand IPA—the reasonable pricing, with most beers priced at a flat ¥1,000, is another major draw. The lineup of unique breweries, such as UCHU Brewing, Fukuoka Craft Brewing, and Nara Brewing Co., is a joy to browse through.
Jameson Irish Whiskey is also prominently featured, and you can enjoy whiskey-based cocktails. With food options like hot dogs and pizza, you can relax and unwind with a light meal.
Smoking and alcohol permitted | A hidden gem for adults
Since it’s a semi-outdoor terrace space, smoking is permitted. With alcohol available, it has the atmosphere of a hidden bar for adults rather than a typical café. It functions as a café during the day and a bar in the evening, making it perfect for a quick break between sightseeing or a nightcap.
Another feature is the international atmosphere, with many foreign travelers frequenting the spot. It’s an open space where art lovers naturally gather, regardless of nationality.

We also recommend combining this visit with a visit to Design Festa Gallery
We recommend combining a visit to the cafe with a stop at Design Festa Gallery. Exhibitions at Gallery EAST and WEST change every 2 to 4 weeks, so you can always discover new art. Another great perk is that admission is free, making it easy to drop by. As a hidden gem in Harajuku where you can enjoy both the cafe and the gallery, we highly recommend paying a visit.
