Located on the first floor of the Aoyama Oval Building in Omotesando, the “HARNEY & SONS Omotesando Store” is a premium tea brand from New York. With rows of black and colorful tins lining the shelves, the store even features a bulk tea section and a tea stand —it’s the kind of place that gets tea lovers excited just by looking around.
So many tea tins! They’re all so cute—I can’t decide which one to choose!
Ah, it’s about a 6-minute walk from Omotesando Station. Whether it’s black tins, colorful tins, or gifts, the selection is truly impressive.
What kind of brand is “HARNEY & SONS,” originally from New York?
HARNEY & SONS is a premium tea brand from New York, founded in 1983 by John Harney. Today, his sons continue to select tea leaves from plantations around the world and create new blends. The sign even features the words “MASTER TEA BLENDERS” and “EST. 1983.”
The Omotesando location is a tea stand that opened in June 2024. It’s a combined space featuring a shop where you can select tea leaves and a stand where you can enjoy freshly brewed tea.

Next to the entrance was a sign for “TEA Smoothies” featuring the business hours and eye-catching photos of fruits like bananas, pineapples, and mangoes.
Pink walls and green shelves. A cozy and cute interior
Upon entering, I was greeted by a cute color scheme of pink walls and green shelves. The compact space, not too large, is packed with cans of black tea.

The walls and the cans in the shop are so colorful—I just can’t stop taking photos!
One of the fun things about this place is that you can choose based on the can designs.
Shelves filled with can after can after can—just looking at them is a joy
The wall covered entirely in black tins is a sight to behold
The top green shelf is lined with black tins featuring gold labels. It has a dignified, sophisticated feel befitting a specialty tea shop.

There are many varieties just in the Earl Grey family alone, including Earl Grey, Earl Grey Supreme, Paris, Winter White Earl Grey, Viennese Earl Grey, and Victorian London Fog (recommended for milk tea). There are also cans labeled “SAMPLE” lined up, allowing you to choose while checking the aroma.

On the lower shelf, you’ll find tea variety sets (¥1,944) and tea selection boxes (A: ¥3,780 / B: ¥5,940) that are perfect for gifts. Each contains several different types of tea bags, making them ideal for those who want to try a variety of flavors or as a gift.
The Colorful HT Series
The HT Series, featuring 20 tea bags (40g) each in a lineup of cute, colorful tins, offers a wide variety of flavored teas, including Hot Cinnamon Sunset, Salted Caramel, Strawberry Vanilla, and Chocolate Mint. The price was ¥3,024 (tax included).

With stickers labeled “Caffeine-Free” and “Popular Item,” as well as point-of-purchase displays explaining the difference between decaf and herbal tea, the store has made it easy even for first-time buyers to choose.
The Strawberry Vanilla has a “Popular Item” sticker on it—I’m curious about it!
The description cards are very detailed. If you’re unsure, just ask a staff member.
From the Classic Series to the hexagonal tins and regional blends
The Classic Series —the brand’s roots—features white tins with lids in different colors. It includes classics like Darjeeling, English Breakfast, Paris, Hot Cinnamon Spice, and Chai.

Tea sets —including teapots, cups, and tea strainers—cute hexagonal tins, and gift blends for occasions like birthday parties and weddings.

You’ll also find blends with distinctly New York names —like “NEW YORK BLEND” and “SOHO”—as well as tins featuring Williamsburg-inspired designs.

You can try small amounts sold by weight
A sign on the shelf reads, “Buy as much of your favorite tea as you like—sold by weight.” Since you can choose small amounts of teas that catch your eye, this is a great service for those who aren’t quite ready to buy a whole can. Please ask a staff member for details on quantities and prices.
The tins start in the 3,000-yen range, so they aren’t exactly cheap. It’s smart to try a small amount first before making a purchase.
Check out the tea stand’s menu
The shop also operates a tea stand where you can enjoy tea by the cup. The menu features three classics: Hot Cinnamon Spice, Milky Oolong, and Paris, all available in either iced or hot versions.

Prices are ¥455 for a Regular and ¥500 for a Large; for lattes, they’re ¥525 for a Regular and ¥570 for a Large (tax included; as of the time of photography). In addition , today’s Traditional Tea, Flavored Tea, and Decaf Tea are listed on a handwritten sign; on this day, the lineup was as follows:
・Traditional: LOVERS LEAP / English Breakfast / DARJEELING
・Flavored: FLORENCE / CITRON GREEN / BLACK CURRANT / VIENNESE EARLGREY
・Decaffeinated: VANILLA COMORO / Herbal HOT Cinnamon Spice / Strawberry Kiwi / Chamomile
Since “Today’s Tea” is served fresh, it takes about 3–5 minutes to prepare after ordering. Note that “MANHATTAN HENGE” (¥546), available only as iced tea, was marked as sold out that day. According to reviews, some customers have mentioned that you can enjoy freshly brewed hot tea even when ordering takeout.
The handwritten “Today’s Tasting” sign is cute
There was a “Today’s Tasting” board at the counter, featuring a handwritten display of that day’s tasting lineup.

・Hot Cinnamon Spice: A richly sweet and invigorating aroma. The vibrant notes of orange and the depth of cloves create an addictive flavor
・BERRY COBBLER: A rooibos tea featuring the sweet-tart notes of blueberries and raspberries, paired with the warm aromas of vanilla and cinnamon. Rich and velvety when served hot, refreshing when served iced
・PROVENCE: The sweet-tart flavor of apricots with a gentle aftertaste of vanilla and honey. Best enjoyed straight
・ORCHATA: A blend of oolong tea, vanilla, cinnamon, and toasted rice. A comforting flavor that’s also great with sugar and milk.
The illustration of the skeleton on the Horchata package is so cute! I wonder what it tastes like!
It seems to be oolong tea-based. If there’s a tasting available, you should try the ones that catch your eye first.
The 3 HARNEY & SONS teas I own
Next, I’ll introduce the three types of HARNEY & SONS black teas I own.

Hot Cinnamon Spice
Hot Cinnamon Spice is said to be the brand’s most famous flagship product. It has a bold and vibrant aroma woven from spices and citrus.Blended with high-quality black tea, orange peel, cinnamon, and cloves, it’s surprisingly sweet and spicy—even though it contains absolutely no sugar or other sweeteners. Its greatest appeal lies in its robust sweetness and stimulating aroma, reminiscent of cinnamon candy.
Created by the founder, this traditional blend is part of the Classic Series, allowing you to experience the brand’s history with every cup. It’s delicious served straight, of course, but we also recommend adding milk to enjoy it chai-style.
PARIS
A basic cup of tea said to be the world’s No. 1 blend, loved by people everywhere. The sweet aromas of vanilla and cassis layer over Earl Grey, with flavors of caramel, vanilla, and blackcurrant unfolding in rich layers. This fruity black tea carries a subtle hint of bergamot and is naturally slightly sweet, so it requires little (if any) sugar. It’s delicious whether served over ice or hot, and you’ll find yourself reaching for another cup time and time again.
Paris is an original creation by HARNEY & SONS. It was reportedly created by Master Tea Blender Mike as a tea that captures the atmosphere of “Paris, the City of Light and the City of Love,” dedicated to his wife, Brigitte.
Vanilla Comoro
A simple, soothing aroma with a delightful vanilla scent. It has a gentle, sweet fragrance reminiscent of vanilla ice cream or vanilla cake. The light flavor of the black tea is complemented by a soft, rich vanilla depth. Since it contains almost no caffeine, you can enjoy it anytime without worrying about the time.
To remove the caffeine, we use the “carbon dioxide method,” considered the safest global standard. Special care has been taken to ensure the flavor and aroma aren’t compromised, so you can enjoy a taste that’s virtually identical to the original tea before decaffeination. Before bed or on evenings when you want to relax, try adding milk for a dessert-like experience.
It’s great that it has a sweet aroma yet requires no sugar. If you’re new to this, starting with these three is a good option.
