Peruvian Restaurant ALDO Omotesando | Tasting World-Class Cuisine: A Review of the Signature Lomo Saltado

Read in Japanese

I visited “Peruvian Cuisine ALDO Minami-Aoyama,” located in a residential area just off Antique Street in Minami-Aoyama, near Gaienmae Station.Peruvian cuisine, said to have emerged from a multicultural fusion of Inca, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and African influences, is a rich and complex culinary tradition often hailed as one of the world’s finest. Having tried it for the first time, I found it truly lived up to its reputation, so I’d like to share its appeal here.

An authentic Peruvian restaurant run by a third-generation Japanese-Peruvian chef

ALDO Minami-Aoyama is an authentic Peruvian restaurant run by ALDO, a third-generation Japanese-Peruvian chef from Peru. Peruvian cuisine is often described as a fusion of indigenous, European, African, and Asian culinary traditions. The restaurant is a small, underground spot conveniently located near Gaienmae and Omotesando.

Cuisine that blends so many different cultures—it’s just so exciting, isn’t it?

It really shows how the history of immigration is reflected in the flavors. There’s so much depth to it.

A lively space unfolds at the end of a narrow staircase

Located in the basement of a bright yellow triangular building, you’ll need to descend a narrow, steep staircase, but the space opens up to the street level outside. There are two tables on the terrace; the dining area is compact, with four counter seats, five tables for two, and six terrace seats—yet it’s bursting with energy. The friendly service is another highlight.

Great Value Weekday-Only Lunch Menu

On weekdays, they offer a great value lunch menu. It’s easy to choose from the photo-illustrated options, such as Lomo Saltado, Ahi de Gazina, and the Quinoa Burger. You can choose between a salad or soup, and a drink (coffee or oolong tea) is included.

The signature “Causa” was sold out. Reservations are recommended

I visited after being drawn to the Causa Lunch (2,100 yen) I saw on Tabelog, but on the day of my visit, I was told, “The Causa is currently sold out. We’ll serve XX instead,” and my appetizer was changed to a different sweet potato dish. It was a bit disappointing that the appearance had changed so much.Later, I noticed that customers who had made reservations were served the Causa, so if you’re planning to visit specifically for the colorful “Causa” appetizer, it’s best to make a reservation in advance. Even though it was a weekday, this popular restaurant was already full by around 11:50 a.m.

It’s sad when the dish you’re hoping for is sold out, isn’t it…

Especially at a popular restaurant, making a reservation is the surest way to go. I’ll take that as a lesson.

A mild-flavored soup

Soup is included with lunch—a gentle-tasting broth with vegetables. Since the main course, Lomo Saltado, has a robust flavor, drinking the soup first helps cleanse your palate.

Time to eat! Peru’s national dish, “Lomo Saltado”

My main course was “Lomo Saltado.” It’s Peru’s national dish, made by stir-frying beef with onions and tomatoes, served with rice and french fries. While the mention of Peruvian cuisine might make some people a bit wary, this dish has a savory, soy sauce-like aroma that I think Japanese people will find quite familiar and approachable. The meat has a satisfying chew, and the purple onions are thoroughly seasoned with soy sauce and spices—it’s incredibly delicious. It’s a simple yet substantial dish that takes a completely different approach from what Japanese people usually eat, yet it’s still a delicious meal.

The sweet-and-spicy sauce clings perfectly to the beef, vegetables, and rice. The french fries are also delicious, soaking up the meat juices and sauce.

The flavor is a sweet-and-spicy stir-fry that blends the umami of the beef, the sweetness of the onions, and the acidity of the tomatoes. The sauce isn’t too thick—it’s just the right balance to pair with plain white rice. The beef is cut into generous chunks, making for a satisfying bite, and the sauce—enriched with the moisture from the onions and tomatoes—brings the whole dish together. The inclusion of french fries is a hallmark of Lomo Saltado, and the fries, soaked up with the meat juices and sauce, are delicious. The accompanying rice is cooked in a style similar to Japanese rice—easy to eat—and pairs well with the stir-fried beef. While it looks a bit like a Western-style plate, the use of soy sauce and seasonings reflects the influence of Japanese immigrant culture—it’s a dish that truly embodies Peruvian cuisine. The combination of rice and sauce creates a flavor that never gets boring; it’s so delicious that I’d love to have it again. If I have the time, I’d definitely like to visit this restaurant again.

It’s also great that it comes with both rice and potatoes—perfect for days when you want a hearty meal.
