Wagyu Teppanyaki "Tsumugi"
Located in the Harajuku and Jingumae area, " Wagyu Teppanyaki Tsumugi. "This teppanyaki restaurant prides itself on A5-grade Kuroge Wagyu steaks and premium hamburg steaks shipped directly from Miyako Island, and it’s a popular spot with high ratings on both Google and TripAdvisor. Curious, I stopped by for lunch and found myself in a fantastical space that exceeded all my expectations!

Access
About a 7-minute walk from either Harajuku Station or Meiji-jingumae Station. It’s located on the 2nd floor of the Hatano Building along Harajuku Street. Look for the white “Wagyu Teppanyaki Tsumugi” sign on the exterior; walk past the brick-style exterior wall, and you’ll find a unique entrance.

Unique interior design with a distinct otherworldly feel
The moment you open the door, you’re transported to another world. With Japanese-style hanging scrolls, model sailing ships, a large panel of cranes, a sun-shaped sculpture, and a gold floral motif ceiling, a one-of-a-kind space unfolds, blending Japanese, Western, and ethnic styles. You’ll be struck by a sense of wonder—“What on earth is this?!”—and a thrilling excitement just from being there.
With herringbone-patterned floors, a large red column, striped sofa seating, and Japanese paintings adorning the brick walls… there are so many highlights that you’ll find yourself snapping photos nonstop even before your meal begins.

We recommend the counter seats where you can watch the flambé
In the center of the restaurant is a large oval teppanyaki counter. If you sit near the center of the counter, you can enjoy the moment the flames shoot up during the flambé up close. The counter, adorned with flowers, is photogenic, so you won’t get bored while waiting for your meal. It’s relatively quiet during lunchtime, so it’s easy to snag a counter seat.

Lunch items range from ¥1,000 to ¥1,400, and all come with a generous serving of rice or bread, miso soup, pickles, and a salad —a satisfying combination. Grilled Pork (¥1,400)・Carefully Selected Pork Ginger Stir-fry (¥1,000), Grilled Shrimp with Mayonnaise (¥1,400), Tsumugi’s Special Okonomiyaki (¥1,200), and Fluffy Teppanyaki-style Omelet Rice (¥1,200).You can also upgrade to garlic rice for an additional ¥200.

For dinner, enjoy dishes such as A5 Kuroge Wagyu steak (Sirloin 100g from ¥4,800), the ultimate Miyakojima Wagyu hamburger steak (¥1,800) sourced from Miyakojima, Okinawa, and the luxurious "Special Steak & Ultimate Hamburger Steak Duo" (¥2,900).

Trying the Teppanyaki Lunch Featuring Carefully Selected Pork!
From the lunch menu, I ordered the Carefully Selected Pork Teppanyaki (¥1,400). Thick-cut pork grilled with garlic sauce is served piping hot right at the counter.
One bite reveals a crispy, aromatic exterior and a juicy, tender interior. The flavor of the garlic sauce enhances the meat’s umami, creating a deliciousness that brings an involuntary smile to your face.
And the side dish—beef shigure —is truly worth mentioning! It comes in a small side dish, but it’s surprisingly delicious, and I savored every last bit. It’s an exquisite side dish that makes you want to keep eating rice. With rice, miso soup, salad, and beef shigure all included, the overall satisfaction is extremely high.

It’s easy to see why this place is so popular with foreigners
During my visit, nearly 90% of the customers were Western tourists. I was surprised to see them coming in one after another, but it’s true that the restaurant offers an atmosphere that feels like a special escape,a quintessentially Japanese teppanyaki style, and an English-language menu —all factors that make it highly appealing to international visitors. The international vibe is one of this restaurant’s unique characteristics.
Summary
Nestled in a hidden gem of a location in Harajuku, “Tsumugi” is a cross-genre restaurant I highly recommend, offering a unique interior, an immersive counter experience, and great value for money at lunch. Lunch service just started recently, so it’s relatively quiet—now is your chance. I definitely want to try the A5 Wagyu steak for dinner as well!
