Shibuya Kenyan
"Kenyan" is a long-established tea specialty shop that has stood in the Shibuya-Jinnan area since 1978. It is a renowned establishment recognized by the Japan Tea Association as a "Shop Serving Delicious Tea. " I’ve been curious about their famous I-Mity for a while, so I visited during a weekday lunch hour!

Access & Best Time to Visit
About a 10-minute walk from Shibuya Station. It’s located on the first floor of the Nanbu Building, facing a Jinnan alleyway; look for the “Kenyan Tea Shop” sign.
For weekday lunch, visiting right after opening is a must! I entered as soon as it opened at 11:30 AM, but by around 11:50 AM, it was already full and there was a line—it’s that popular. If you’re coming for lunch, I recommend arriving early.

A cozy, antique-style space
The interior features antique furniture, creating a space that’s both nostalgic and warm. Wooden tables and rattan chairs line the room, and you can gaze out at the Jinnan neighborhood through the large windows. The clientele is relaxed, and the atmosphere feels like time is moving slowly.
With free Wi-Fi available, it’s the perfect spot for a break from work or to enjoy a book.

Extensive tea menu
We offer an extensive selection of teas, including hot, iced, pot, and flavored varieties.Lunch is served from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM, featuring Western-style set meals. Kenyan’s recommendations include the I-Mee Tea (¥550), I-Mee Tea Large (¥650), and Chai-Mee Tea (¥550), along with various Ceylon teas and flavored teas (Earl Grey, Blueberry, Rose, Jasmine, etc.) starting at ¥700.

Trying the signature I-Mee Tea!
The I-Mity (¥550) I was looking forward to is Kenyan’s original iced milk tea. Taking a sip, the black tea flavor is rich and robust, with an exquisite balance between the milk’s creaminess and sweetness. It has a milk-rich taste reminiscent of chai without the spices, making it so easy to drink that you can gulp it down even on a hot day. The aftertaste is refreshing, and I couldn’t help but understand why it has been loved for so many years.
You can also take it home in a takeout container, making it the perfect companion for a post-meal stroll.

The hamburger steak lunch is also highly satisfying
I ordered the homemade hamburger steak (served with rice, salad, and soup) from the lunch menu. The hearty, substantial hamburger steak is generously coated in demi-glace sauce—delicious. The standard portion of rice feels a bit on the small side, so big eaters should take note. With the salad and soup included, it’s a well-balanced lunch set.

Don’t miss the cake display case
The display case near the entrance is lined with homemade cakes. There’s a wide variety, including raspberry cream cheese, blueberry cream cheese, chestnut cream, chocolate cake, and banana cake (¥550 each). They look like they’d pair perfectly with tea, so I definitely want to try the cake set next time.

.
Original recipe books are also available for purchase
Inside the shop, there was a poster promoting Kenyan’s original recipe book, “ Kenyan’s Home Recipes.” It’s available as an e-book on Amazon and as a paperback at the register. It seems to be a popular souvenir from Tokyo as well.

Summary
Located in the Jinnan area, a short distance from the hustle and bustle of Shibuya, "Kenyan" has been preserving its timeless flavors and atmosphere since 1978. Their signature I-Mity tea offers a unique balance of richness and smoothness—a taste you’ll never forget once you’ve tried it. It’s sure to be crowded during lunchtime, so be sure to plan an early visit!
